NXP, Huawei bring mobile payments to Chinese public transit

The partnership will allow commuters to preload their public transit fares into their Huawei Honor 8 or Honor V8 smartphones.

NXP Semiconductors has extended its collaboration with smartphone manufacturer Huawei to bring secured and convenient mobile experiences for public transit systems in Shanghai City, Shenzhen, Guangzhou and Beijing.

The partnership will allow Huawei users to preload their public transit fares into their Huawei Honor 8 or Honor V8 smartphones. Using Huawei Pay, commuters tap the phone to a reader to use the fare for boarding or ‘top-up’ their account. Users will also benefit from NXP’s secure mobile transit platform, which features Near Field Communications (NFC) and embedded Secure Element (eSE) in the same module.

ABI Research forecasts that more than 80% of all POS terminals will soon allow contactless payment. Currently, the tap-and-go functionality is being used in more than 350 smartphone models around the world, majority of them in China.
