Vietnam moves to strengthen cybersecurity laws

As network attacks grow sophisticated, laws are needed to strengthen network security, says Vietnam IC deputy minister Hung.

Network attacks targeting big businesses are now more sophisticated and growing in number, said Vietnam’s Information and Communication deputy minister Nguyen Thanh Hung.

Speaking at a Dec. 3 conference in Hanoi, Hung said that information security worldwide has undergone many changes as Internet of Things (IoT) devices were targeted widely. But even with this serious threat, there is still no international pact made to strengthen network security, he was quoted saying by Vietnam News.

Vietnam is currently working on a network security law, which was approved by the National Assembly. The law will be implemented under the guidance of Government Decree No. 2 and enforced together with other agencies under Decision No. 898/QD-TTg dated May 27, 2016.

“Information security was expected to experience more complicated changes in the upcoming time. The situation is also seen in Vietnam. This was why State agencies, enterprises, organisations and individuals in the ICT sector should quickly have suitable solutions to respond to the issue,” the deputy minister said.

Vietnam Information Security Association (VNISA) has also announced an increase in its annual Vietnam Information Security Index. The index reached 59.9% this year, showing a 13.5% increase from 2015.

The survey showed that indices in 2013 to 2015 were 37.3% to 47.4%. The VNISA survey ran on 692 firms and organisations in Hanoi, Danang and HCM cities from September to November.
