Samsung takes over movies with HDR cinema LED screen

Electronics giant Samsung has installed its first cinema-sized LED screen at the Lotte Cinema World Tower in Seoul, South Korea.

Stretching nearly 10.3m wide in size and designed as a high dynamic range (HDR) LED theatre display, Samsung's LED screen accommodates a variety of theatre configurations, including 4K resolution (4,096 x 2,160) and peak brightness levels (146fL) "nearly 10 times greater than that offered by standard projector technologies." The Cinema LED Screen’s distortion-free presentation also leverages ultra-contrast and low-tone greyscale settings to showcase the brightest colours, deepest blacks and pristine whites at a nearly infinite contrast ratio, according to the company.

Samsung has also paired its Cinema LED Screen with audio technologies from JBL by Harman, including speakers bordering the screen, proprietary audio processing technology and JBL’s Sculpted Surround system.

Prior to its commercial debut, Samsung ran the Cinema LED Screen through a series of tests to validate its performance and presentation. In May 2017, the Cinema LED Screen became the first product to achieve full compliance with the Digital Cinema Initiatives (DCI) theatre technology standards.

Samsung said its Cinema LED Screen maintains its advanced presentation capabilities in a range of dark and ambient lighting conditions, which makes it ideal for venues that may also want to use their theatre space for corporate events, concerts, sports event viewing and gaming competitions.
