Photocouplers for high-speed comm reach up to 50Mbit/s

Article By : Toshiba

Toshiba claims the photocouplers can assure a propagation delay time of 20ns (max), pulse width distortion of 8ns (max) and propagation delay skew of 10ns (max).

Toshiba’s Storage & Electronic Devices Solutions Co. has released a line of photocouplers aimed at high-speed communications at data rates up to 50Mbit/s. According to the company, the TLP2767 attains both a creepage and clearance distance of 8mm and isolation thickness of 0.4mm for reinforced isolation. It is offered in an SO6L package and promises isolation voltage of 5kVrms (min), while the TLP2367 is housed in a 5pin small SO6 package, ensuring creepage and clearance distance of 5mm (min) and isolation voltage of 3.75kVrms.

According to the company, the photocouplers guarantee a propagation delay time of 20ns (max), pulse width distortion of 8ns (max) and propagation delay skew of 10ns (max). They can be used to reduce the dead time of various interfaces including inverters, which can contribute to improving the power efficiency of systems. On the input side, incorporation of Toshiba's original high output infrared LEDs reduce the threshold input current by nearly 20%, compared with Toshiba existing products.

On the output side, a photo detector IC manufactured with a CMOS process cuts the supply current by nearly half, compared with the company’s existing products, which can contribute to lower power consumption and cost reduction of systems. Furthermore, they can contribute to lowering the operation voltage of systems with guaranteed supply voltage of 2.7V to 5.5V, at temperatures up to 125°C. Applications include programmable logic controllers (PLC), I/O interface, photovoltaic (PV) inverters and FA inverters.

The TLP2767 and TLP2367 boast 2.3mm (max) low-height packages and meet international safety standards including UL1577 and EN60747-5-5. Shipments of the two products have begun.
