ON Semiconductor has announced the expansion of its power factor correction (PFC) controller portfolio. Designed for use in lighting, adapters, ATX supplies, flat-panel TVs and other power applications, the four new devicesthe NCP1605, NCP1606, NCP1654 and NCP1655enable the development of highly efficient power supplies that meet emerging global energy efficiency and power factor standards.

“The four new devices complement our existing PFC product portfolio by providing industry-standard replacements with improved features, new and innovative control methods, and added functions that ease both the time and effort required to design highly efficient Switch Mode Power Supplies,” said Andy Williams, senior VP and general manager of the automotive and power regulation group.

NCP1605
The NCP1605 is an enhanced, high-voltage standby-mode PFC that can work in fixed-frequency discontinuous conduction mode (DCM) and/or in critical conduction mode (CRM). The device incorporates all the features necessary for building robust PFC stages. The NCP1605 can operate as a PFC master, ensuring that a power supply’s second stage only starts up under safe conditions. In addition, it integrates the skip cycle capability to minimize standby losses. Offered in a Pb-free SOIC-16 package, the NCP1605 is priced at $1.07 per unit in 1,000-unit quantities.

NCP1606
The NCP1606 series are CRM PFCs designed for use as a pre-converter in electronic ballast, AC adapters, flat TVs and other low- to mid-power offline converters, typical up to 300W. These devices incorporate adjustable overvoltage protection and built-in undervoltage protection. The NCP1606A and NCP1606B provide a pin-to-pin compatible replacement for industry-standard devices. The NCP1606B further reduces power losses by proposing a lower overvoltage protection current and a lower current sense threshold. The devices are offered in a Pb-free SOIC-8 package priced at 33.5 cents per unit in 2,500-unit quantities. They are also available in a Pb-free PDIP-8 package priced at 40.5 cents per unit in 1,000-unit quantities.

NCP1654 and NCP1655
The NCP1654 and NCP1655 are CRM PFC controllers. They control the power switch conduction time in a fixed-frequency mode and in dependence on the instantaneous coil current. They also integrate high safety protection features like a brown-out function and an effective input power runaway clamping circuitry. The devices minimize the number of external components required for circuit implementation. The NCP1654 is pin-to-pin compatible with industry-standard devices, while the NCP1655 offers a pin-to-pin upgrade to ON Semi‘s NCP1653 fixed-frequency current-mode PFC controller. The new devices are offered in a Pb-free SOIC-8 package priced at 80 cents per unit in 2,500-unit quantities. They are also available in a Pb-free PDIP-8 package priced at 88 cents per unit in 1,000-unit quantities.

ON Semi is showcasing its PFC controller portfolio at the ongoing 12th International IC-China Conference & Exhibition.
