AMD Demos 32 Core CPU, Talks 7nm

Consumer CPU giants engaged in Computex core count war

TAIPEI — Hot on the heels of Intel’s demonstration run of a 28-core CPU, AMD has decided it too can participate in the core wars and demonstrated its Threadripper 2 CPU with a full 32 cores and 64 threads at its Computex keynote.

Built on a refined Zen architecture dubbed Zen+, it will be built on a 12nm process and slot into the existing TR4 socket. Launch is slated for the third quarter of 2018, possibly ahead of Intel’s 28-core offering.

At the same event, AMD also decided to talk 7nm, confirming that its Vega-based Radeon Instinct GPUs aimed at server-based machine learning are due to launch in the second half of 2018. Drumming up further 7nm news, it also announced that it’s got 7nm Zen 2 silicon in labs, due to sample later this year ahead of a full-scale server launch in early 2019 as part of the Epyc series.
