Eye on China, Infineon ropes vendors for IoT security

Infineon has partnered with Chinese companies and government to establish the Open Laboratory for Smart Home Interconnection Security in Beijing.

In the age of connected homes and devices, it is extremely important to secure the user’s access and data. In that light, Infineon Technologies has partnered to found the Open Laboratory for Smart Home Interconnection Security in Beijing.

Together with other founding members like Midea, Huawei Consumer BG, Tencent, CESI and the China Electronics Standardisation Institute (Ministry of Industry and Information Technology), Infineon will develop security technologies for smart home appliances made and used in China.

Securing China's refrigerators

Smart devices and home appliances, including refrigerators to entertainment systems, can be connected to the Internet using an IP address. If unsecured, the system that connects them can be vulnerable to attacks and compromise the safety and functions of smart devices.

China is considered one of the fastest growing markets for smart home devices. IHS Markit 2016 predicts that between 2016 and 2020, growth potential for smart home appliances can grow exponentially high, with a 97% annual growth rate. Shipments are also expected increase to 223 million units, up from the 15 million units, during the timeframe.
