Decades ago, automotive industry celebrated the first infotainment-in-the-car, the AM radio. Today, most new cars are equipped with telematics systems such as the navigation system and eCall, which enable two-way communication. Automotive industry continues to venture to newer era with the next ADAS (advance driver assistance system) and 5G automotive. As these new technologies involves communication, the dependency on more frequencies channels dramatically increases the complexity. The risk of interference or co-existence between the narrow bandwidths and triggering errors in automotive core or safety related functions increase too.

Let us take a quick look on some of the common automotive technologies and their frequencies ranges.

  • Infotainment – most are in the kHz to MHz range, except Sirius (2.3GHz) and VICS (5.8 GHz)
  • Body electronics – RKE and TPMS are 315 MHz or 433.92 MHz or 434.79 MHz or 868 MHz; while some high-end cars have interior radar for gesture control and passenger monitoring at 57 GHz and 66 Hz
  • GNSS (Global navigation satellite systems): The US GPS, European Galileo, Chinese Beidou and Russian GLONASS are within the MHz to GHz range
  • Electrical drive train – The wireless EV charging system is within kHz
  • Connectivity – eCall solutions tag along 2G to 5G protocols, C-V2X is at 5.9 GHz, NFC at 13.56 MHz
